Background

Tony Shafer founded KlarDeutsch LLC to offer something straightforward: thoughtful, one-on-one German tutoring for people who want to make real progress in the language. Over more than eighteen years of studying and teaching German, he developed a clear sense of how people actually learn — and more importantly, where they tend to get stuck.

German has a reputation for being difficult, and that reputation is not entirely wrong. Cases, gender, word order — these things genuinely take time and repetition to absorb. But they also follow patterns, and once those patterns become familiar, the language starts to feel more manageable. Tony's approach is to make those patterns clear and connect them to language that learners actually want to use.

He works with learners at all levels — from complete beginners who have never studied German before, to people returning after a long gap, to more experienced learners who want to improve a specific skill. Each situation is different, and Tony approaches each one differently.

Teaching philosophy

How Tony approaches teaching.

The goal of every session is for the learner to leave knowing something they did not know before — and feeling comfortable asking questions until they do.

Patience

There is no pressure to move faster than you are ready to. If something needs more time, it gets more time. Learning a language is not a race.

Clarity

Grammar explanations should make sense, not just be technically correct. Tony takes care to explain things in a way that actually lands.

Practicality

Lessons focus on language that is genuinely useful — not invented textbook scenarios, but the kind of German that comes up in real conversation and everyday situations.

Honest feedback

Corrections are gentle but consistent. Getting comfortable with being corrected is part of learning, and it is done in a way that encourages rather than discourages.
